When a new message arrives in my inbox the folder name is bold and the number of new messages shows in ( ).

When a new message arrives and is placed into a subfolder (using a rule), there is no indication anywhere that a new message is there. Is there some way to fix this so that I will know?

You can make a shortcut of each subfolder to be displayed on the left sided folders bar. This way, you will see the number of new emails displayed between () after each folder name.
